The author characterizes all compact sets in \(\mathbb{R}^d\), not necessarily convex, with the property that any affine transformation of the set has a symmetry hyperplane whose dimension can vary from \(1\) to \(d-1\). Among convex compact sets, the ellipsoids are the only ones with this property. Otherwise, it is a generalized ellipsoid which is defined as any set of the form \(\{\lambda AS, \lambda \in I\},\) where \(S\) is the unit sphere, \(I \subset \mathbb{R}\) is a compact set, and \(A\) is a nonsingular linear operator. The author investigates the problem for the noncompact case too where he finds certain hypersurfaces with the affine symmetry property. A conjecture of the complete classification of noncompact sets with the affine symmetry property is given.
