This paper concerns Châtelet surfaces \(S\) which are smooth proper models of the affine surfaces \[ Y^2+Z^2=X(a_3X+b_3)(a_4X+b_4) \] where \(a_3,a_4,b_3,b_4\) are non-zero integers with \(a_3b_4\not=a_4b_3\). For any such surface the authors verify Manin's conjecture by showing that \[ N_{S,H}(B)=C_H(S)B(\log B)+O_S(B(\log B)^{0.972}) \] for a suitable height function \(H\), where \(C_H(S)\) is the Peyre constant [\textit{E. Peyre}, J. Théor. Nombres Bordx. 15, No. 1, 319--349 (2003; Zbl 1057.14031)]. It should be noted that the surfaces above may fail to satisfy the Weak Approximation principle, so that \(C_H(S)\) takes account only of the adelic points where the Brauer--Manin obstruction is trivial. The methods of the paper build on those used by the first two authors [Compos. Math. 144, No. 6, 1375--1402 (2008; Zbl 1234.11132)], which were themselves based on ideas of the reviewer [``Linear relations amongst sums of two squares'', London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series 303, 133--176 (2003; Zbl 1161.11387)]. However much of the work needed relates to the computation of the leading term in the asymptotic formula and the verification that it does indeed correspond to the constant predicted by Peyre.
