This paper treats a general case (based on the stress formulation) in which the eigenfunction expansion method (of an upper triangular operator matrix) is applied to obtain the simple and convenient general solution of a two-dimensional elasticity problem. The theoretical results obtained are more precise than those given in [\textit{W.-A. Yao} and \textit{Y.-F. Sui}, Appl. Math. Mech., Engl. Ed. 25, No.~2, 178--185 (2004; Zbl 1145.74379)], namely, the authors obtain two complete orthogonal systems of eigenfunctions, which belong to the two block operators arising in the operator matrix. The application given is interesting and relates to mechanical phenomena occurring in the case of a rectangular beam supported at the ends, subject at the upper and lower edges to continuously distributed forces. The results continue the previous research of the second author, cf.\ [\textit{J.-J. Huang}, \textit{Alatancang} and \textit{H. Wang}, ``Eigenfunction expansion method and its application to two-dimensional elasticity problems based on stress formulation'', Appl. Math. Mech., Engl. Ed. 31, No.~8, 1039--1048 (2010; Zbl 1214.47019)].
