The authors introduce a dual sequence condition (DSC) for a discrete dynamical system. Let \(f: U\to X\) be a continuous map defined on an open subset \(U\) of a metric space \(X\). Let \(I\subset U\) be a compact subset such that \(f|_I: I\to I\) is a homeomorphism and there exists a continuous map \(g: I \to \Sigma_2= \{0,1\}^{\mathbb Z}\) with the property \(g\circ f|_I = \sigma \circ g\) where \(\sigma: \Sigma_2\to \Sigma_2\) is the shift map. The DSC relates properties of \(f\) and \(g\) with the sequence of Lefschetz numbers \(L_k=L(h^k)\), \(k\geq 0\), of iterates \(h^k\) of a linear map \(h: E\to E\) of a graded vector space \(E\) of finite type. The dual sequence \(\{L^\ast_k\}_{k\geq 0}\) is defined by \[ L_k^\ast = \sum_{l=0}^k (-1)^{k-l} {\binom k l} L_l. \] The authors prove arithmetical properties of the dual Lefschetz sequence and exhibit some dymanic consequences, mainly concerning topological methods for detecting chaotic dynamics.
