Let \(F\) be the field of order \(p\), for a fixed prime \(p\). In the paper under review the authors investigate several questions related to the mod-\(p\) Schur multiplier \(H_2(G,F)\). They show among others that if \(G\) has trivial center, then the mod-\(p\) Schur multiplier is infinite if and only if there are uncountably many non-residually finite, non-isomorphic central extensions of \(G\) with kernel of order \(p\). J.-P.~Serre has defined a group \(G\) to be good if the cohomology groups of \(G\) and its profinite completion \(\widehat G\) are naturally isomorphic on finite coefficients. The authors show that certain infinitely generated nilpotent groups of class two are not good, and that the same holds for non-uniform arithmetic lattices of algebraic rank \(1\) groups over local fields of positive characteristic.
