The author considers the covariant metric free formulation of the Maxwell system. The paper concerns jump conditions for the fields and the energy-momentum tensor on an arbitrary moving surface between two different media. The author derives from the differential and integral Maxwell equations the covariant boundary conditions, which are independent of any metric. The presented jump formulas are applied in the case of a uniform isotropic medium to derive a Lorentzian type metric as a condition for the existence of the wave front. The results hold for ordinary materials as well as for metamaterials.
