It is well known that the Volterra operator \[ (Vf)(x)=\int_0^xf(t)\,dt \] acts boundedly on \( L^p[0,1]\), \(1\leq p\leq \infty\). The author provides estimates of the \(L^p\) norm of the semigroup \(e^{-tV}\), \(t\geq 0\). The author first observes that for \( p=2\), the Hilbert space case, it is a semigroup of contractions. However, for \(p\not=2\) the semigroup is never uniformly bounded. Indeed, the author proves that \[ \limsup_{t\to\infty} t^{-|1/4-1/(2p)|}\|e^{-tV}\|_p>0. \] The ideas of the proof are in the same spirit of the work by the reviewer, \textit{J. Sánchez-Álvarez} and \textit{J. Zemánek} [``Uniform Abel-Kreiss boundedness and the extremal behaviour of the Volterra operator'', Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 91, No. 3, 761--788 (2005; Zbl 1088.47040)]. In particular, it is used the connection between the Volterra operator and the Laguerre polynomials along very sharp classical estimates on these polynomials.
