A series of papers written by \textit{A. Nevo} in the 1990's [J. Am. Math. Soc. 7, No. 4, 875--902 (1994; Zbl 0812.22005); Duke Math. J. 76, No. 1, 113--140 (1994; Zbl 0838.43013); Duke Math. J. 86, No. 2, 239--259 (1997; Zbl 0869.43005)] culminated with a pointwise ergodic theorem in \(L^p\) for measure-preserving actions of the orientation-preserving isometry group of the hyperbolic plane, on probability spaces with respect to ball averages and every \(p > 1\). In this paper, the authors construct an explicit example to show that Nevo's result cannot be extended to the case \(p = 1\). This is the analogue of \textit{T. Tao}'s example [Forum Math. Sigma 3, Paper No. e27, 19 p. (2015; Zbl 1359.37010)] that the pointwise ergodic theorem fails in \(L^1\) for actions of free groups with respect to ball averages.
