The authors study quadratic approximations for two families of hyperquadratic continued fractions in the field of Laurent series over a finite field. For a real number \(\xi\) and an integer \(n\ge 1\) denote by \(\omega_n(\xi)\) (resp., \(\omega^*_n(\xi)\) the supremum of the real numbers \(\omega\) (resp., \(\omega^*\)) with \[ 0\leq |P(\xi)|\le H(P)^{-\omega}(\text{resp. } 0\leq |\xi-\alpha|\le H(\alpha)^{-\omega^*-1}) \] for infinitely many polynomials \(P(X)\) with integer coefficients of degree at most \(n\) (resp. algebraic numbers \(\alpha\in\mathbb C\) of degree at most \(n\). \textit{T. Ooto} [J. Number Theory 185, 349--378 (2018; Zbl 1431.11089)] asked if it is true that \(\omega_n(\alpha)=\omega_n^*(\alpha)\) for an integer \(n\ge 1\) an algebraic Laurent series \(\alpha\in\mathbb F_q((T^{-1}))\). The authors give a negative answer to this question. As the second application, the authors determine the degrees of these two families of hyperquadratic continued fractions in particular case.
