Let \(G\) be a compact connected semisimple Lie group and let \(H\) be a closed subgroup. Consider two Riemannian metrics \(g,g_0\) on \(M=G/H\) with scalar curvature \(R,R_0\), respectively. We say that \(g_0\) is rigid in the sense of Gromov if \(g\geq g_0\) and \(R \geq R_0\) implies \(g=g_0\). The authors prove that bi-invariant metrics on \(M\) are rigid among \(G\)-invariant metrics. If \(\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{h}\) are the Lie algebras of \(G, H\) respectively, the proof of the result relies on the possibility to express the scalar curvature \(R\) in terms of numerical data coming from diagonalizing \(g\) on the \(g_0\)-orthogonal complement of \(\mathfrak{h}\) in \(\mathfrak{g}\).
