Combining the mixed finite elements for the Poisson equations and piecewise discontinuous finite element spaces for spatial discretization, finite element methods are developed for acoustic wave propagation in the Drude-type metamaterials. For time discretization the Crank-Nicolson scheme is used. A priori error analysis is carried out. A local post-processing scheme is proposed to circumvent lower convergence rate of the pressure variable in some mixed finite element pairs. It was shown that the local postprocessing has better approximation property than the original numerical pressure. The numerical experiments confirm the convergence analysis and atypical wave propagation patterns in metamaterials.
