In this paper, the following problem is considered. Let S be a compact Riemann surface with nodes. Does there exist a point in an augmented Schottky space representing the surface S? An answer to special cases of the problem has been obtained by the author [J. Math. Soc. Japan 35, 22- 35 (1983; Zbl 0494.32006)]. In this paper, first, the interchange operators, which play essential roles in studying the question, are studied, and a complete answer to the problem is given by using the operators. The answer to the problem is affirmative, and is stated as follows. Given a compact Riemann surface S of genus g (\(g\geq 2)\) with nodes and a basic system of loops and nodes \(\Sigma\) on S such that all nodes on S are contained in \(\Sigma\). Then there exists a point in the augmented Schottky space with respect to \(\Sigma_ 0^*\) which represents the Riemann surface S, where \(\Sigma_ 0^*\) is the basic system of Jordan curves raised from \(\Sigma\) by application of the interchange operators.
