The authors study the problem of selection of complete and minimal subsystems of eigen- and associated vectors of a quadratic operator pencil of the form \(L(\lambda)=A+\lambda B+\lambda^ 2C\). They work in a very general setting. In particular, no positivity assumption on C appears. (Note that this circumstance is very convenient for applications). The authors give a new approach to the problem in question based on purely analytical tools. They use a special representation of the principal part of \(L^{-1}(\lambda)\) in a neighbourhood of a real pole and \(biorthogonality\quad relations\quad of\quad Keldysh\quad type\) which are obtained by analyzing the behavior of \(L^{-1}(\lambda)\) near its poles too.
