The author studies general properties of G-ANR's, i.e., absolute neighborhood retracts in the category of G-spaces and G-maps, where G is a compact Lie group. First, topological properties of G-spaces are studied, such as paracompactness and the existence of TN G-coverings (tubular numerable coverings); paracompactness, normality and metrizability of G-CW complexes are studied. An equivariant version of Dugundji's extension theorem is proved and applied to a proof of the equivalence of the following conditions: 1) G-ANR; 2) G-ANE (absolute neighborhood extensor); 3) G-neighborhood retract of a convex G-subset of a Banach G- space. Properties of open G-subspaces, finite products, G- contractibility, and local G-ANR's are studied. It is shown that the restriction functor \(Res^ G_ H-\), the H-fixed point functor \(X\mapsto X^ H_ 1\) and the functor \(G^ x_ H-\), where H is a closed subgroup of G, preserve the G-ANR property. Characterization of G-ANR's by small G-homotopies are proved as well as G-domination of G-ANR's by G-nerves. It is shown that the mapping space of a compact G-space into a G-ANR is a G-ANR; and G-ANR are characterized by small G-deformations and G- domination. Adjunction spaces of G-ANR's are studied. It is shown that every G-ANR has the homotopy type of a G-CW complex; and that every countable G-CW complex has the G-homotopy type of a countable G-ANR. A characterization of G-ANR's in terms of ANR-properties of fixed point sets \(X^ H\), such as done by the reviewer [\textit{J. Jaworowski}, Manuscr. Math. 35, 323-329 (1981; Zbl 0488.54009)] are not touched upon.
