Let F be a field and \(\Phi\) be an indecomposable root system. Let G be the Chevalley group of \(\Phi\) over F. Consider the corresponding Chevalley algebra L as FG-module, the adjoint module of G. In the present paper the full lattice of FG-submodules of L is determined. If Z(L) denotes the centre of the Lie algebra L, then, in the generic case, L/Z(L) is a simple FG-module. Only if \(\Phi\) is of type \(B_{\ell}\), \(C_{\ell}\), \(\ell \geq 3\) or \(F_ 4\) and F has characteristic 2, or if \(\Phi\) is of type \(G_ 2\) and F has characteristic 3, there are additional submodules. For instance, in all of the above exceptional cases the subspace of L spanned by the short roots is G-invariant. As a corollary the submodule structure of the adjoint modules for the twisted groups of Lie type is obtained. The above results are related to the determination of all ideals in the Lie algebra L. This is done in [\textit{G. M. D. Hogeweij}, Indagationes Math. 44, 441-460 (1982; Zbl 0512.17003)]. The methods in the present paper, however, are completely elementary, using only the operation of generating elements of G on a Chevalley basis of L.
