Based on the Euler-Frobenius polynomials [\textit{L. Euler}, Institutiones calculi differentialis cum eius usu in analysi finitorum ac doctrina serierum, St. Petersburg, 1755. Approximation Theory 31, 272-278 (1981; Zbl 0419.41008) and (**) Complex contour integral representation of cardinal spline functions. Contemporary Mathematics, Vol. 7. Amer. Math. Soc., Providence R. I. (1982)] the author of the paper under review introduced in his important paper (*) the cardinal exponential spline interpolants \((s_ m)_{m\geq 1}\) with respect to the complex weight \(h\neq 0\). Later on the reviewer studied this class of cardinal splines by using different methods based on complex contour integral representations [\textit{W. Schempp}, J. Approximation Theory 31, 261-271 (1981; Zbl 0419.41007) and (**)]. It is the purpose of the present article to establish a new approach to the family \((s_ m)_{m\geq 1}\) by starting from the cardinal linear spline function \[ s_ 1(x)=1+(h-1)x,\quad x\in [0,1]\quad s_ 1(x+1)=hs_ 1(x),\quad x\in {\mathbb{R}} \] and then defining \(s_ m(m\geq 2)\) recursively by means of the averaging procedure \[ s_ m(x)=\int^{x+1/2}_{x- 1/2}s_{m-1}(u)du/\int^{+1/2}_{-1/2}s_{m-1}(u)du. \] This procedure is particularly effective in the case \(h=-1\) (Euler splines) to establish \(\lim_{m\to \infty}s_ m(x)=\cos \pi x\) for all \(x\in {\mathbb{R}}\) and to indicate the parallels between \(s_ m(.)\) and cos \(\pi\) x concerning symmetries, zeros, signs, and monotonicities. - It would be interesting to link the new construction of the family \((s_ m)_{m\geq 1}\) with the complex contour integral representation approach mentioned above.
