In this relatively long, rigorous and thorough paper the authors develop the title theory and exhibit its principal features. This treatment differs from a similar treatment of the problem which came earlier [the authors, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 76, 355-391 (1981; Zbl 0498.73005)] in that (1) it allows for previous loadings and unloadings, (2) it utilizes strain, not stress, space in the plastic formulation, (3) comprehensive kinematic assumptions are adopted which differ from the preceeding paper, and (4) the theory is properly invariant under finite rigid motions. Of interest to specialists in the field.
