\textit{S. J. Sidney} [Pac. J. Math. 80, 265-272 (1979; Zbl 0377.46042)] showed that a ''highly non-affine'' function cannot operate on ReA for a non-trivial ultraseparating Banach function algebra. In this paper we show that a non-affine function h cannot operate on the real part of a non-trivial ultraseparating Banach function algebra A on X. This extends our previous work on function algebras [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 83, 565-568 (1981; Zbl 0493.46045)]. We first show a very weak boundedness condition for the operating function and used it to prove that a non-affine h operates on a thick subset of (ReÃ)\({}^-\). Then it follows that \((Re\tilde A)^-=C_ R(\tilde X)\) and \(A=C(X)\).
