Necessary optimality conditions for minimization problems governed by an abstract evolution equation of order n are derived. In doing so, the main idea is to rewrite the higher order equation into an equation of order one. For optimization problems governed by such an equation earlier results by the author can be applied. As usual, the optimality conditions are sufficient in the convex case. The paper concludes with some examples.
