This paper is concerned with a mathematical model for the process of repeated cell division and recombination in two non-overlapping genetic intervals. A test for statistical independence of such recombination and a method of estimating the rate of double recombination are obtained. The author first discusses crossing over in two genetic intervals on different chromosomes, and on the same side (as well as opposite sides) of the centromere on one chromosome. He then considers crossing over and gene conversion, examining the cases of loci on different chromosomes, loci on opposite sides of the centromere on one chromosome, and the cross-over marker between the centromere and the conversion marker. The paper concludes with a discussion of double gene conversion and of two alternative models of population growth, the first being purely deterministic and the second purely stochastic.
