Quite a lot is now known about conditions under which a periodic FC-group (sometimes called a locally normal group) can be embedded in a direct product of finite groups. We emphasize that direct product means restricted direct product in this review. For an account of this area see \textit{M. J. Tomkinson} [FC-groups, Res. Notes Math. 96 (1984)] or \textit{Yu. M. Gorchakov} [Groups with finite classes of conjugate elements (1978; Zbl 0496.20025]. Now if G is an arbitrary FC-group with torsion subgroup T, then G/T is abelian and it is perhaps natural to consider whether G can be embedded in a direct product of a set of finite groups and a torsion-free abelian group. This is one of a series of papers of the author devoted to this question. The centre of T plays an important role. The main results are, with the above notation and writing \(A=G/T:\) Theorem 1: Suppose T has finite exponent and can be embedded in a direct product of finite groups, and \(A/A^ q\) is finite for every prime q such that the centre \(\zeta\) (T) has an element of order q. Then G can be embedded in a direct product of finite groups and a torsion-free abelian group. Theorem 2. Let S be a given group of finite exponent that can be embedded in a (restricted) direct product of finite groups, and let B be a torsion free abelian group. Consider the class \({\mathfrak X}\) of all FC- groups G whose torsion subgroups t(G) are isomorphic to S and are such that G/t(G)\(\cong B\). Then every \({\mathfrak X}\)-group can be embedded in a direct product of finite groups and a torsion free abelian group if and only if \(B/B^ q\) is finite for every prime q such that the centre of S has an element of order q.
