This paper is concerned with certain spaces of functions analytic on the unit disc D. Loosely speaking, it shows that nearly every function in one of these spaces has most of its boundary values buried in its range. Here, ''nearly every'' means on a residual set of functions in the categorical sense; the meaning of ''most'' depends on the space under consideration. For f analytic in D, let \(E_ f\) denote those points \(\zeta\in \partial D\) where \(f(\zeta)\) fails to exist (as a nontangential limit) or where \(f(\zeta)\not\in f(D)\). The main results are these: (a) The Lebesgue measure of \(E_ f\) is zero for nearly every \(f\in H^{\infty}(D).\) (b) The logarithmic capacity of \(E_ f\) is zero for nearly every f in the Dirichlet space. (c) If h is any Hausdorff measure function, then the corresponding Hausdorff measure of \(E_ f\) is zero for nearly every f in the disc algebra. A prime ingredient of the proof of (a) is a result relating the geometry of a plane region to the harmonic measure of sets in its boundary.
