The author considers the Dirichlet problem on \(\Omega\) for the equation \(u_ t=\min \{\psi,\Delta u\}\) with given initial condition, where \(\psi\) is non-negative and in \(L^ 2(\Omega)\). It was shown by \textit{H. Brezis} [Nonlinear evolution equations, Proc. Symp. Madison/Wis. 1977, 141-154 (1978; Zbl 0468.35047)] that u converges weakly in \(H^ 1_ 0(\Omega)\) as \(t\to \infty\) to a function \(u_{\infty}\) satisfying \(\min \{\Delta u_{\infty},\psi \}=0\). In this paper, the author obtains partial results on the regularity of the solutions of the time-dependent equation, on whether \(u_ t\) converges strongly to \(u_{\infty}\) in \(H^ 1_ 0(\Omega)\) as \(t\to \infty\) and on the characterization of \(u_{\infty}\). He obtains his regularity result by considering a dual problem.
