    The author considers the dual space of nilpotent Lie groups. Let G be a real, connected, simply connected, nilpotent, and non-Abelian Lie group. Let \({\mathcal A}(G)\) denote the space of subgroup-representation pairs of G equipped with the subgroup-representation pair topology of Fell [\textit{J. M. G. Fell}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 110, 424-447 (1964; Zbl 0195.422)]. Theorem: Let \((H_ n,S_ n)_ n\) be a sequence in \({\mathcal A}(G)\) such that, for each n, \(S_ n\in \hat H_ n\) and \(S_ n\) is not a character. Then \((H_ n,S_ n)_ n\) converges to (H,S) in \({\mathcal A}(G)\) if, and only if, for each subsequence of \((H_ n,S_ n)_ n\), there exists a subsequence (H'\({}_ i,S'\!_ i)_ i\) such that (1) there exist subgroups H''\({}_ i\subseteq H'\!_ i\) and \(T_ i\in \hat H''\!_ i\) with dim H''\({}_ i=\dim H'\!_ i-1\), S'\({}_ i=ind(T_ i,H''\!_ i\uparrow H'\!_ i)\), and (H''\({}_ i,T_ i)_ i\) converges in \({\mathcal A}(G)\) to some point (H'',T), and (2) S is weakly contained in ind(T,H''\(\uparrow H).\) From this, the author derives the following lemma. Lemma: Let \((H_ n,S_ n)_ n\) converge to (H,S) in \({\mathcal A}(G)\). If \(f\in {\mathfrak g}^*\) such that \(f| {\mathfrak h}\in \Omega_ S\) (the Kirillov orbit of S), then for every subsequence of \((H_ n,S_ n)_ n\), there is a subsequence (H'\({}_ i,S'\!_ i)_ i\) such that for each i, there exists \(f_ i\in {\mathfrak g}^*\) such that \(f_ i| {\mathfrak h}_ i\in \Omega_{S_ i}\) and \(f_ i\to f\in {\mathfrak g}^*.\) Thus, the author has developed an approach to Kirillov's conjecture different from that due to \textit{I. Brown} [Ann. Sci. Ec. Norm. Supér., IV. Sér. 6(1973), 407-411 (1974; Zbl 0284.57026)]. Several attempts had been made to generalize Brown's result to more general solvable Lie groups. Perhaps this new approach will yield more satisfying results.
