Recurrence formulas for zonal polynomials (Q791005)

Zonal polynomials appear in the power series expansion of multivariate distribution function and hypergeometric functions of matrix argument. A review of the subject by \textit{A. T. James} can be found in Theory Appl. spec. Funct., Proc. adv. Semin., Madison 1975, 497-520 (1975; Zbl 0326.33010). An important but unsolved problem is the calculation of the product of two zonal polynomials as a linear combination of other zonal polynomials. In the present paper this problem is solved in the case when one of the two polynomials belongs to a partition of the type \((1^ k)\). This gives a complete set of recurrence formulas for zonal polynomials.
