A classification is given of the parallel calibrations of degree 3 in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 6\) (the first nonclassical case), and hence of the associated geometries of area-minimizing surfaces. There are four types: special Lagrangian, Kähler-like, degenerate, and double point. In particular, a description is given of when r 3-planes can be simultaneously calibrated. Moreover, a thorough and elegant description is given of the entire set of calibrations dual to a fixed 3-plane. A less detailed classification was made independently and simultaneously by the reviewer [''The exterior algebra \(\Lambda^ k{\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and area minimization'', to appear in Linear Algebra Appl.]. Further results in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 6\) have been given by \textit{R. Harvey} and the reviewer [''The comass ball in \(\Lambda^ 3{\mathbb{R}}^ 6\)'', preprint]. A classification in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 7\) has been provided by \textit{R. Harvey} and the reviewer [''The faces of the Grassmannian of 3-planes in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 7\)'', preprint]. Partial results in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 8\) have been obtained by \textit{J. Dadok}, \textit{R. Harvey}, and the reviewer [''Calibrations on \({\mathbb{R}}^ 8\)'', in preparation].
