For a path-connected H-space X, having fundamental group of rank n, a surjective homomorphism \({\mathcal E}(X)\to GL(n,{\mathbb{Z}})\) is constructed which is split by an anti-homomorphism. Thus the group \({\mathcal E}(X)\) of self-homotopy equivalence classes is not of finite rank if \(n\geq 2:\) this extends the known result for \(rank(\pi_ i(X))\geq 2\) for some \(i\geq 2\). Next, conditions are given under which the subgroup \({\mathcal E}_ H(X)\) of classes of h-homomorphism contains \(GL(n,{\mathbb{Z}})\) as a direct factor.
