Many standard finite difference approximations applied to the simulation of adverse mobility ratio, miscible displacement in a porous medium are plagued by a strong dependence of the numerical results on the orientation of the finite difference grid. This problem is commonly referred to as the grid orientation effect. In this paper, the grid orientation effect is related to grid-dependent anisotropies in the discretization. A modified equation analysis is used to characterize these anisotropies. This characterization motivates a new family of finite difference schemes that show essentially no dependence on the orientation of the grid.
