Finite difference and finite element approximations of the solutions of the one-dimensional, immiscible flow equation without capillarity, the so-called Buckley-Leverett equation, are considered. A term representing artificial diffusivity is added to this model to insure that the numerical solution is nearly monotonic. This guarantees that the numerical solution converges to the relevant physical solution. The formulation of the methods proposed in this paper emphasize self-adaptivity of the computing grid. The efficacy of such a grid based on the inverse function of the approximate solution is demonstrated. Convergence rates are presented for the uniform mesh case.
