The author gives a numerically explicit version of the well known zero-free region for the Dirichlet \(L\)-function \(L(s,\chi)\). Specifically, if \(\chi\) has modulus \(k\) then there is at most one zero satisfying \(\sigma \geq 1-1/R \log M,\) where \(M=\max(k,k| t|,10)\) and \(R=9.64... \); and \(s=\sigma +it\) as usual. The possible exceptional zero satisfies the familiar conditions. Moreover an explicit version is given of a Theorem of Landau. Let \(\beta_ 1\), \(\beta_ 2\) be hypothetical exceptional zeros corresponding to moduli \(k_ 1\), \(k_ 2\) respectively. Let \(N=\max(k_ 1k_ 2/17,13)\) and \(S=3.84... \). Then \(\min(\beta_ 1,\beta_ 2)\leq 1-1/S \log N.\) The first result above generalizes that given by \textit{J. B. Rosser} and \textit{L. Schoenfeld} [Math. Comput. 29, 243--269 (1975; Zbl 0295.10036)] for the Riemann zeta-function, with the same constant \(R\). The present paper uses ideas of the same kind, but requires special care in the cases where \(\chi\) has small order or \(| t| \leq 1\).
