In this paper the author describe completely the idempotents in the reduced \(C^*\)-algebra of discrete Abelian groups, showing that their support lies in a finite subgroup. This is done by describing the open and closed sets of a compact Abelian group. The following three theorems are proved. Theorem 1: Given \(...\to X_ n\to X_{n-1}\to...\) a sequence of compact spaces and continuous onto maps, let \(X=\lim_{\leftarrow}X_ n\) with \(q_ n:X\to X_ n\) be the projection maps. Then \(S\subset X\) is open and closed if and only if for some n there exists an open and closed set \(S\subset X_ n\) such that \(s=q_ n^{-1}(S).\) Theorem 2: If G is a compact Abelian group, then a subset is open and closed if and only if it is of the form \(\coprod Hx_ i\) where \(H\subset G\) is a subgroup of finite index. Theorem 3: Let A be a discrete Abelian group and \(e\in C^*(A)\) an idempotent. Then the support of e generates a finite group.
