[For part I--III see [ibid. 46, 61--108 (1979; Zbl 0389.22021, ibid. 46, 805--859 (1979; Zbl 0421.22008), and Invent. Math. 71, 381--417 (1983; Zbl 0505.22016).] Let \(G\) be a real linear reductive Lie group. To each irreducible admissible representation of \(G\) it can be associated a natural induced representation, which is called standard [\textit{R. Langlands}, ``On the classification of irreducible representations of real algebraic groups'' (1973)]. This association sets up a bijection between the irreducible representation and the standard ones. One way to describe irreducible representation is to write them as (finite) integer combinations of standard representations in an appropriate Grothendieck group. The inverse problem is the problem of decomposing a standard representation into its irreducible constituents. In the paper the author shows that sometimes these problems are not only similar but actually ``the same''. Clear definitions and concrete examples are given, all results are proved in detail.
