The author considers the acoustic scattering expressed by the equation \((\partial^ 2_ t-A)u(t,x)=0\) in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 1\times {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) (\(n\geq 2)\), \(u|_{t=0}=f_ 1,\quad \partial_ tu|_{t=0}=f_ 2\) on \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) where \(A=\sum^{n}_{i,j=1}\partial_{x_ i}(a_{ij}(x)\partial_{x_ j})\) is equal to \(\Delta\) for \(| x| \geq r_ 0\), and under some assumptions he obtains results corresponding to those by \textit{A. Majda} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 30, 165-194 (1977; Zbl 0335.35076)]. Let S(s,\(\theta\),\(\omega)\) be the scattering kernel defined by Lax- Phillips. Then, \(S(s,\theta,\omega)=\int(\partial_ t^{n-2}\square v)(x\theta -s,x;\omega)dx\quad(\theta \neq \omega),\) where v is the solution of the equation \((\partial^ 2_ t-A)v=0\), \(v=0\) for \(t<-r_ 0\). By this representation it is proved that there is a constant \(s_{\omega}(\theta)\) determined by \(\omega\),\(\theta\) and the coefficients \(a_{ij}(x)\) such that \(\sin g \sup p S(\cdot,\theta,\omega)\subset(-\infty,s_{\omega}(\theta)].\) Furthermore, under some assumptions, the author verifies that S(s,\(\theta\),\(\omega)\) is singular (not \(C^{\infty})\) at \(s_{\omega}(\theta).\) We note that the above second result is obtained from examination of WF[v]; but further analysis of v is necessary for proof of the third result. This is reduced to showing that the oscillatory integral \(\int e^{i\sigma \psi(x)}\rho(x)dx\) does not decrease rapidly in the case where the stationary points of \(\psi\) (x) are not necessarily non- degenerate. The detailed proofs are described in the forthcoming paper of the author [cf. Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 9, 467-502 (1984)].
