The following theorem is proved: Let G be a LCA group and P a closed subsemigroup of \(\hat G\) such that \(P\cup(-P)=\hat G.\) Let \(\mu\) be a finite regular Borel measure on G whose Fourier-Stieltjes transform vanishes on the complement of P. Then the absolutely continuous and singular parts of \(\mu\) both have the same property. This theorem extends work of \textit{H. Helson} and \textit{D. Lowdenslager} [Acta Math. 99, 165-202 (1958; Zbl 0082.282)], \textit{K. de Leeuw} and \textit{I. Glicksberg} [Acta Math. 109, 179-205 (1963; Zbl 0126.121)] and \textit{R. Doss} [Math. Z. 97, 77-84 (1967; Zbl 0162.452)]. The latter result is the same as that proved here except that Doss has the further condition that \(P\cap(-P)=\{0\}.\) Let \(\Lambda =P\cap(-P)\) and let H be the annihilator of \(\Lambda\) in G. The theorem is proved by first applying desintegration of measures to reduce the problem to one on H. It is shown that the property of vanishing on the complement of P is preserved under this operation. Since the image of P in Ĝ/\(\Lambda\) satisfies the extra condition imposed by Doss, it is possible to use his result for the measures on H and then integrate these to achieve the result of the paper.
