The author shows the interdependence of mathematics and arts in two related areas in which craftsmen have used the mathematics of symmetry. First the author discusses the covering of a plane surface with ornaments, resp. wall paper patterns and patterns of tiling. Secondly the author looks at the craft of weaving together strands of materials, such as cotton, linen, wool, and straw to make cloth, baskets, or balls. The article is illustrated by some excellent photographs (by Chris Pedersen).
