We give a local characterization of minimal isometric immersions f: \(M^ 2\to {\mathbb{C}}P^ 2\) in terms of three functions on the surface M: Gaussian curvature, normal curvature and the pull back of the Kähler form on \({\mathbb{C}}P^ 2\). In particular, we characterize those metrics on M which allow a holomorphic or totally real minimal isometric immersion into \({\mathbb{C}}P^ 2\). As global applications for closed surfaces M we get relations between genus, degree and self intersection number, bounds for the total area and curvature restrictions (some of which hold for open surfaces, too).
