In the paper entitled ''Retracts and homotopies for multimaps'' [to appear], \textit{Suszycki} defined and studied the notion of multi- retraction on compact metric spaces. This paper under review extends this notion of multi-retraction to metric spaces and studies various types of multi-valued functions. The motivation for this work comes from the study of CE-maps and Vietoris-type maps. As a sample, we state and discuss the following theorems: Theorem: Let \(\phi\) :\(X\to Y\) be a multi-map such that X is C-space and \(\phi\) (x) is compact with trivial shape for every x in X. If there exists a map g:\(Y\to X\) such that y belongs to \(\phi\) (g(y)) for every y in Y, then X shape dominates Y. The notion of C-space is studied by \textit{D. F. Addis} and \textit{J. H. Gresham} [Fundam. Math. 101, 195-205 (1978; Zbl 0397.54051)]. Theorem: If a map g:\(Y\to X\) is a hereditary shape equivalence and X is \(m_ c-AR\quad(m_ c-ANR),\) then Y is \(m_ c-AR\quad(m_ c-ANR).\) Theorem: If \(g:Y\to X\) is a CE-map, X is C-space, and X is an \(m_ c-AR (m_ cANR)\), then Y is an \(m_ c- AR\quad(m_ c-ANR).\) The notion of \(m_ c-AR\quad(m_ c-ANR)\) is defined as absolute (nbd.) compact multi-retract. Many other related results are given. These results are related to shape properties of CE- maps on infinite dimensional spaces.
