The author presents a method for obtaining a uniform analytic asymptotic solution of the problem of small-time response of an elastic bimaterial medium containing a penny-shaped crack across the fibre when the crack is subjected to a sudden twist. The method holds good within the framework of linear elastodynamics, and for any bimaterial the square of whose matrix shear wave speed is less than twice the square of the fibre shear wave speed. The method of solution consists in reducing the problem first to a singular integral equation which is later reduced to an eigenvalue singular Fredholm integral equation by use of the small-time assumptions, Wiener-Hopf technique and adoption of a form of solution which is the sum of a singular part and a nonsingular part, where the eigenvalue represents the stress singularity eigenvalue associated with the problem. The stress singularity eigenvalue equation, integral equation and the equation for the stress intensity factor are solved approximately giving results for the surface displacement gradient normal to the plane of the crack and outside the crack region, the stress singularity eigenvalue and stress intensity factor as functions of the material disparities and time.
