The present book is a collection of papers treating special problems of economies with an extracting industry, notably the possibility that expansion in the resource sector may lead to contraction in other sectors. Two of the papers contain mathematical models (the contributions by N. V. Long and by H. Herberg and K. Enders). Both present models of an open economy with two or three sectors and discuss the comparative statics based on evaluation of partial derivatives at the equilibrium. Contents: Horst Siebert, Allocation policy in a resource -- exporting country (1--16); Ngo Van Long, On the short-run and long-run effects of a resource boom (17--45); Horst Herberg and Klaus Enders, More on the consequences of a resource boom and the cures of the Dutch disease (47--94); Michael G. Porter, Taxation of the Australian resource sector (95-116); Egbert Gerken, Diversification and stabilization in a resource-exporting country (117--155).
