The paper studies the controllability of the bilinear abstract hyperbolic system \(u''+Au+p(t)Bu=0\) where A and B are possibly unbounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H and p(t) is a scalar control. Previous papers essentially required A and B to be simultaneously diagonalizable and here this assumption is replaced by assuming that \(B=D+L+F,\) where D is diagonal, L is lower triangular and Hilbert Schmidt and F is a finite- rank operator. Sufficient conditions for approximate controllability are obtained and applied to a wave-type example.
