Using Brownian motion, the author gives new proofs of the Beurling projection theorem and the Hall projection theorem, which give estimates for the harmonic measures of certain sets in the plane. Extensions of these results to higher dimensions, which would be harder to obtain by classical methods, follow naturally from the author's proofs. The following is also proved: Let K be a compact set in the unit ball B of \(R^ d\) (\(d\geq 2)\) with 0\(\not\subset K\), and let be \(K^*=\{x/\| x\|:x\in K\}\). Then there exists a constant \(c>0\), depending only on d, such that \(\lambda(K)\geq c\Lambda_{d-1}(K^*),\) where \(\lambda\) (K) is the harmonic measure at 0 of K with respect to \(B\backslash K\) and \(\Lambda_{d-1}\) is (d-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure.
