A nonlinear model of population dynamics with age structure is analyzed. The problem takes the form \(u^ i_ t(t,x)+u^ i_ x(t,x)+d_ i(x,u(t,\cdot))u^ i(t,x)=0\), \(u^ i(t,0)= \int_{0}^{\infty}b_ i(x,u(t,\cdot))u^ i(t,x)dx, t,x\geq 0, u^ i(0,x)=u^ i_ 0(x)\), \(i=1,...,n\), where \(u=(u^ 1,...,u^ n)\) is the density vector of n species at time t with respect to age x, and \(b^ i\), \(d^ i\) are the age-dependent and density-dependent birth and death rates, respectively. Under various assumptions on the form of b and d the author investigates the existence and stability of equilibrium solutions. The existence of a nontrivial equilibrium is proved using fixed point theory in Banach spaces. The asymptotic stability of the solutions is investigated using linearization techniques. The existence of periodic solutions is investigated using Hopf bifurcation theory. The problem is approached using operator semigroup theory in Banach spaces.
