The ''central result'' in this paper (author's term) is that if \(z(p)=P(p)/Q(p)\) is a real rational function, represented as the ratio of polynomials and T is a bounded invertible linear accretive operator on a Hilbert space H (i.e. (Tx,x)\(\geq 0\) for \(x\in H)\), then the operator Z(T) defined by the usual functional calculus for rational functions is also accretive. The proof is straight forward and contains no new ideas. The author states that this observation allows one to generalize results in circuit theory relating to passive time-invariant lumped RLC networks to more general system theoretic structures where one-terminal pair elements are replaced by appropriate n-ports. However, the paper is quite vague about this, as the author states that a great deal of work has been done in this direction but makes no attempt to place his ideas in perspective to other papers in this area.
