There is a question: Let R be a discrete valuation ring with maximal ideal (t) and the field of fractions Q(R). Let A be a finitely generated ring over R. Assume that \(A\otimes_ RQ(R)\) and A/tA are isomorphic to the polynomial rings of n variables over Q(R) and R/tR respectively. Does it follow that A is isomorphic to a polynomial ring of n variables over R? This question is important for criteria of polynomial rings. The case \(n=1\) was proved by \textit{P. Eakin} and \textit{W. Heinzer} [Conf. commut. Algebra, Lawrence 1972, Lect. Notes Math. 311, 61-77 (1973; Zbl 0271.13010)]. The case \(n=2\) was claimed by \textit{T. Kambayashi} [Invent. Math. 52, 275-281 (1979; Zbl 0414.14008)] in the case R/tR is of characteristic zero. But the proof was incomplete. The author is giving a good proof of the claim of Kambayashi.
