The paper deals with an ''overstability'' phenomenon for dual extremum problems of the Carathéodory-Fejér type. Let \(\omega \in L^{\infty}({\mathbb{T}})\) (\({\mathbb{T}}\) is the unit circle) and suppose \(\phi \in H^{\infty}({\mathbb{T}})\) satisfies \[ (*)\quad \| \omega -\phi \|_{\infty}=\inf \{\| \omega -\psi \|_{\infty}:\quad \psi \in H^{\infty}({\mathbb{T}})\}>0 \] (such a \(\phi\) exists for every \(\omega)\). Suppose there is an \(H^ 1({\mathbb{T}})\)-function \(f^*\) such that \(\| f^*\|_{H^ 1}=1,\) \[ \int f\omega dm=\sup \{\int f\omega dm:\quad f\in H^ 1({\mathbb{T}}),\quad \| f\|_{H^ 1}\leq 1\} \] (m stands for the normalized Lebesgue measure on \({\mathbb{T}})\). Then the function \(\phi\) satisfying (*) is unique. The main theorem asserts the existence of a sequence \(\epsilon^ 0=\{\epsilon^ 0_ n\}_{n\geq 0}\) of positive numbers such that \(\sum_{n\geq 0}\epsilon^ 0_ n<+\infty,\) and for every sequence \(\epsilon =\{\epsilon_ n\}_{n\geq 0}\) satisfying \(0\leq \epsilon \leq \epsilon^ 0\) the ''perturbed'' extremum problem of minimizing \[ d_{\epsilon}(\psi)=^{def}\| \omega -\psi \|_{\infty}+\sum_{k\geq 0}\epsilon_ k| {\hat \psi}(k)| \] \(({\hat \psi}(k)\) being the kth Fourier coefficient of \(\psi)\) has the same solution as (*), i.e. \(\inf \{d_{\epsilon}(\psi):\quad \psi \in H^{\infty}({\mathbb{T}})\}=d_{\epsilon}(\phi),\) and \(d_{\epsilon}(\phi)=d_{\epsilon}(\psi)\) for a \(\psi \in H^{\infty}({\mathbb{T}})\) implies \(\psi =\phi\). An explicit expression of \(\epsilon^ 0\) is given. The paper contains also some applications of the same methods to extremum problems for Cauchy type integrals.
