The class of completely simple semigroups forms a variety under the operations of multiplication and inversion \((x^{-1}\) being the inverse of x in its maximal subgroup). From the universal algebraic point of view it is natural to consider the subalgebra lattice of such a semigroup S. The author first describes each subalgebra of S in terms of certain triples composed of a subset of I, a subset of M and a subgroup of G (S being represented as a Rees matrix semigroup \({\mathcal M}(I,G,M;P)\); from this description the lattice may be found. Those completely simple semigroups whose subalgebra lattices are modular or distributive are then characterized.
