We study some structures canonically associated to a standard \(W^*\)- inclusion, i.e. a triple consisting of von Neumann algebras \(A\subset B\) and a vector \(\Omega\) cyclic and separating for A, B and A'\(\bigwedge B.\) Most of the paper is dedicated to the special case where the inclusion \(A\subset B\) is split in the sense that A and B' generates a \(W^*\)- tensor product. In this case we construct a functorial correspondence between the triples \(\Lambda =(A,B,\Omega)\) as above and canonical type I factors \(N_{\Lambda}^ s.\)t. \(A\subset N_{\Lambda}\subset B\); for fixed A, B the correspondence between \(\Omega\) and \(N_{\Lambda}\) is analyzed in detail. We show that the group of all automorphisms of \(\Lambda\) is a compact metrizable subgroup of Aut(B), which acts with full spectrum and infinite multiplicity, leaving \(N_{\Lambda}\) stable. We define intermediate automorphism groups between Au\(t(\Lambda)\) and \(Aut(A,B)\) and show a kind of Galois correspondence with \(N_{\Lambda}.\) A distinguished representation of Au\(t(\Lambda)\) by unitaries of B is constructed. If A and B are factors, we show that \(N_{\Lambda}=A\bigvee JAJ=B\bigwedge JBJ,\) where J is the modular conjugation of A'\(\bigwedge B\) with respect to \(\Omega\). The second equality defines a more general class of \(W^*\)-inclusions having a natural interpolating von Neumann algebra. In some cases this process can be iterated to give a chain of interpolating von Neumann algebras and we discuss an example where the chain extends by continuity to a one-parameter monotone family of von Neumann algebras, each having a natural meaning and connecting A to B. We study canonical constructions of split standard \(W^*\)-inclusions from given ones and a few applications in quantum field theory. As an application of this theory, it has been shown by the second named author that every (weakly separable) infinite factor possesses an AFD subfactor with trivial relative commutant [ibid. 76, 145-156 (1984)]. Related results have been obtained by \textit{S. Popa} [ibid. 76, 157-162 (1984)].
