Let A be a function algebra on a compact Hausdorff space X. The notion of local, strongly local, approximately normal and boundedly strongly local function algebras are given; for example, A is said to be strongly normal if it contains each \(f\in C(X)\) for which there is a collection of closed subsets \(\{K_ 1,...,K_ n\}\) of X whose interiors cover X, and such that \(f_{/K_ i}\in A_{K_ i}\) for every \(i=1,...,n.\) The main result of this paper is the following: A function algebra satisfying a certain separation property is strongly local. Some other results are concerned with conditions implying that an approximately normal function algebra is boundedly strongly local.
