The paper deals with the study of the motion of an incompressible Rivlin- Ericksen fluid of second grade filling the whole space due to the longitudinal and torsional harmonic oscillations of an infinite rigid cylindrical rod. The simplicity of the motion causes the velocity components to satisfy linear differential equations whose solutions are obtained very easily.
