Two approximation methods are proposed for 2-D analog and digital transfer functions using doubly terminated cascade - separable network properties. It is shown that, due to the fact that the transfer function of such networks is not separable, exact quadrantal symmetry cannot be obtained. The methods proposed, however, yield a good approximation of quadrantal symmetry. Both methods appear to be applicable for approximations which give maximally flat magnitude response, equiripple magnitude response or other responses in two variables. The paper is well written and it is suggested for those involved in two-dimensional filters.
